The first intercollegiate football game was played in 1869, and in 1874, representatives from Columbia, Rutgers, Yale, and Princeton formed the Intercollegiate Football Association to lay down the finalized rules of college football. Despite the changes in rules, football remained an intensely physical game, which lead many colleges to ban it from being played.

In 1905, members from 62 schools of America met in New York to discuss the changes to be made to football to make it more acceptable. This body came to be known as the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, and later on as the National Collegiate Football Association or NCAA. The innovations made in the game by the NCAA have helped make football the popular sport it is today.

Professional football started in America in 1892. In 1920, the National Football Association was formed which is the first professional football league. The first president of the NFL was Jim Thorpe who was also the founder of this league. In 1959, another rival league was formed by the name of American Football League.

The Super bowl, the annual game between NFL and AFL, became the biggest football event of the year. However, both the leagues were merged later on, but the Super bowl remains the biggest event of American football to this day.
